    • 2023 Fall Program Information

      You may sign up for both session 1 and 2

      Our fall sailing program is designed to provide youth with opportunities to grow in their love for the water and build friendships along the way. Daniel Island Yacht Club has a fleet of Collegiate z420s, Open Skiffs and Optimists which are made available to Junior Sailors on a first-registration basis. The mission of the Daniel Island Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is to develop knowledgeable youth sailors and foster in them a lifelong love of and involvement in sailing. Each session is $400 per Member and $500 per Non-Member.

      Program Goals
      1. Safety is the number one priority at all times
      2. Develop sportsmanship, seamanship, integrity, and interpersonal skills
      3. Create a fun atmosphere for sailors of all levels and interests
      4. Instill responsibility for boats, equipment, and facilities
      5. Provide high-quality instruction that is tailored to the individual sailor’s needs

      Green Fleet

      This course is designed for novice sailors ages 8-13. The Green Fleet includes the basics of rigging all boats, basic boat handling, rigging, seamanship (knots, weather, etc.), sportsmanship, and water safety. Building confidence, ensuring safety, demonstrating respect, courtesy to others, and good teamwork are primary goals. Novice sailors learn basic nomenclature, seamanship, and sailing skills, including sailing on all points of sail, tacking and gybing.

      Blue Fleet

      This course is designed for intermediate sailors ages 9-13 who understand the basics and are seeking to master more advanced concepts and sail more efficiently. Great for sailors who participated in a summer sailing class. Building confidence, ensuring safety, demonstrating respect, courtesy to others, and good teamwork are primary goals. Participants will further their skills in boat nomenclature, seamanship, sailing all points of sail, tacking/gybing, and will be introduced to sailing around a course.

      Session 1 Red Racing Fleet

      This course is for racing sailors, ages 13-18 seeking to learn 420 sailboat racing techniques, tactics, and rules in preparation for participation in regattas. This class focuses on 420 sailing techniques from steering and trimming, to roll tacking, roll gybing and sailing a racecourse. Seamanship topics of knots, docking, care of equipment and safe capsize recovery will be covered in depth. Basic racing rules and racing drills are introduced on the water, while sail theory and concepts are covered in classroom sessions. DIYC Junior Sailing staff will foster a fun environment where sailors with a varying range of previous experience are challenged.

The Blue Fleet will be aboard the Open Bic Skiffs which is great for sailors who already have a concept of sailing. Building confidence, ensuring safety, demonstrating respect, courtesy to others, and good teamwork are primary goals. Participants will further their skills in boat nomenclature, seamanship, sportsmanship, sailing all points of sail, tacking/gybing, and will be introduced to sailing around a course.

      Session 1:

  • Summer Camp Sailing Program 2024
    • 2024 Summer Camp Sailing Program Information

      Our summer camp sailing program is designed to provide youth with opportunities to grow in their love for the water and build friendships along the way. Daniel Island Yacht Club has a fleet of Collegiate z420s, Open Skiffs and Optimists which are made available to Junior Sailors on a first-registration basis. The mission of the Daniel Island Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is to develop knowledgeable youth sailors and foster in them a lifelong love of and involvement in sailing.

      Don’t miss out on our 2024 Summer Junior Sailing Program. During June & July we offer both a morning and an afternoon session for sailors of all levels. Your first session is $400 per Member and $500 per Non-Member. Each additional week is $250 per member and $300 per non-member.

      This summer, DIYC will be partnering with Charleston Waterkeeper to create a positive environmental impact, through our junior sailing programs. The Waterkeeper will be providing cleanup equipment and safety gear that our sailing camps can utilize throughout the season during times when conditions prevent us from sailing. In addition to the areas around the DI Waterfront, we will also be engaging in cleanup via boat in areas where sailing instruction takes place, such as north/south of DIYC along the Wando River.

  • Private Instruction
    • We offer private instruction for sailors of all levels. Lessons are $70 an hour for members and $100 for a hour for non-members. All lessons have a two-hour minimum time limit. To schedule a private lesson, please contact the Quartermaster, at [email protected] or 843-471-1881
